Ocala has a population of about 57,000 people, which has been growing since 2010. It is a warm, welcoming town with a thriving business and cultural community, and a beautiful, historic downtown. Ocala is known as the “Kingdom of the Sun” for its beautiful, year-round weather. It is also considered one of the horse capitals of the world for its stables of world-renowned thoroughbred horses.

History

The beautiful, natural areas surrounding Ocala have been used to film movies since 1916, and television as well. Hollywood has shot six Tarzan movies in the area, as well as The Creature from the Black Lagoon and episodes of Sea Quest and One Life to Live. That’s just the beginning of Hollywood’s interest in the area. The Silver Springs International Film Festival is held there every year. It is named for Silver Springs State Park, a 350-acre nature park near the Silver River.

Festivities

There are several other festivals and events during the year. Ocala offers Downtown Art Walks every First Friday, September through May. The Brick City Blues Fest comes ot Ocala in May. In October, Ocala celebrates “1Ocala 1America”, a week-long series of events celebrating racial harmony and cultural diversity.
