Job Growth In Coconino County

By Dave Knospe

As the area’s population continues to rise, northern Arizona’s vast Coconino County is riding positive economic momentum.

The county features an unemployment rate almost one full point lower than the national average and projected growth in jobs of over 26%. That, combined with lower taxes, provides a strong economic outlook for the region. Both income taxes and property taxes are lower than the national average in Coconino County.

The Flagstaff area anchors the expanse of Coconino County and is the largest city and county seat. The city is home to one of the area’s largest employers and economic contributors. W.L. Gore & Associates employs many locals in higher income jobs and has consistently aided in regional job growth. The Flagstaff facility is the hub of Gore’s medical products division.

Yet, the true economic engine in this portion of northern Arizona is the natural beauty that spans the far-reaching areas of the county. The landscapes surrounding Grand Canyon National Park range from arid deserts to lush, mountain forests featuring an array of grasslands, springs, deep canyons and wildlife. Tourism to this recreational paradise draws visitors from around the world, generating $687 million annually supporting over 12,000 jobs.
