It was a clear, starry night in the late 90s in Southern Washington, when my best friend called me on the phone with excitement claiming that she was seeing a UFO outside. Curious, but skeptical, I took the cordless phone outside and my father and I looked up into the night sky.
There was an object moving across the sky steadily that looked like a star, but my friend identified it as a satellite. She pointed out that satellites only move in one direction because they orbit the earth. She then directed me to what looked like a bright star (her claimed UFO) off to the left of the satellite. To my amazement, the bright star dimmed as the satellite moved past it and then proceeded to brighten.
Then the alleged UFO moved a little to the side and stopped. It moved a couple times, stopping and moving, which was inconsistent with what a normal star would do. Finally, it shot off faster than anything I’d ever witnessed in the opposite direction the satellite was orbiting, disappearing.
In my teenage excitement, I turned to my father and exclaimed, “Did you see that?”
“Yup,” he said, acting as if the possible sighting of UFOs was an everyday occurrence. Perhaps it was for a Vietnam Vet.
I can’t say for certain that what we witnessed was an actual UFO, or if they even exist, I can state that I wasn’t alone experiencing the phenomenon as my friend was on the phone across town and my father stood next to me witnessing the same thing. Plus, there are plenty of others who fervently believe in the existence of UFOs.
